The Hundred Dollar Jar
When we lived in Germany, we used to go to all the local fests. My beloved was insistent that the whole point of going to a fest was to get a beer stein, which could only be gotten by drinking all the beer inside. Often, a refill was needed. After three years, there were quite a few. After that tour, he was assigned to recruiting duty, and he'd spend a bit of cash every day while he was out and about networking. Every night, he'd empty his pockets into his catch-all basket on his desk. I noticed it was starting to accumulate. It was an epidemic; beer steins and pocket change were overrunning our small quarters. I decided to conserve space by putting the change into a stein. In about three months, it was full, and I took it to the bank. It was very nearly a hundred dollars! Every three to four months, we'd fill it up and every time there was the same amount. Three to four hundred dollars a year in loose change definitely works for me! We still have a partial cash, partial debit spending system, but we don't fill up our jar nearly as quickly any more. It takes about a year nowadays, but it's still a happy surprise every time.

Loose change is great, it's like found money. :)
Bank of America has a "round it up" program going now where they'll round up all of your debit purchases to the next dollar, put the extra into a savings account, and then they'll MATCH it. Something to consider if you're a big debit card user like I am. :)
We are, but our bank gives us a percentage or our debit charges back each month. We've got the best bank I've ever heard of!
We belong to the BofA savings account too! I also have a coffee can where we put all of our change in.
That is a cool idea ... wish our bank did that! We tend to use our debit card more -- because we spend cash a lot easier than using our debit card! I do have a teddy bear tin I collect change in -- and I'll confess my kids will always show me the new quarters and don't think I have it, so I just drop them in another basket saved for them. LOL!
Penelope has beautiful blue eyes!!
You reminded me of a book I read during the holidays: Christmas Jars by Jason F. Wright
In the book the family saves all their loose change during the year in a jar and then at Christmas gives it to a family in need. I liked the idea but didn't care much for the writing style.
I'm a longtime reader this is my first comment, so hello and congrats on your precious little one!
